during the “Hampshire Rescue Case of 2014,” 75 abandoned horses were found in devastating condition. These gorgeous animals were neglected, terrified, and holding out for a miracle. 30 of the horses were confined to stalls, with little-to-no exercise or interaction. The rest were left outside in shoddy paddocks with insufficient shelter, excess manure, and lack of handling. All of the horses were emaciated, malnourished, and barely surviving.
But enter the wonderful folks at the Hooved Animal Rescue & Protection Society (HARPS) in Barrington, Illinois. Donna Ewing, the founder and president of HARPS, vowed to give these horses a brand new beginning by finding them the permanent homes they needed. With the help of Hands and Hooves of Chicago, HARPS set off on its incredible mission to save all 75 horses before they were sent to slaughter… and they only had weeks to do so.
In October of 2014, the animal heroes put out a call to potential adopters, and word spread via local and national news outlets. Time was running out; would they be able to pull off such a daunting feat?
